Graves’ disease is a type of hyperthyroidism in which the eyes bulge, increasing the surface area that can be exposed to the environment, causing painful tissue around the eyes, and difficulty closing the eyes or blinking.
About 5 percent of people with Graves’ disease also have SLK (superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis).
