Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis

Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) is characterized by inflammation and redness found at the top of the eyeball, where the white meets the iris, or colored part of the eye. This condition does not cause Dry Eye, but may be induced by Dry Eye. Symptoms include redness, foreign body sensation, pain, and fluctuating vision. When the upper bulbar conjunctiva of a patient complaining of Dry Eye symptoms is not examined, the diagnosis is frequently missed.

About 5 percent of people with Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism that affects the eyes, have SLK.
